a 5 pound bass

April 25, 2009- Okay, so it wasn't really a 5 pound bass, but since Robert Earl Keen didn't name his song "A 2 Pound Bass", I had to go with this title.
Paw Paw took Pecos fishing on our recent visit to Louisiana. (Thanks to Mr. Kurt & Mrs. Tina for letting us fish!!!) He is becoming quite the fisherman and hooked himself a nice 2 pound bass. This was the first bass Pecos has caught and he was kind of shocked at the size of it. Remember, the small perch he's been catching lately are barely the size of his hand. Now he thinks he is a Bass Master. They say everything is bigger in Texas, but I guess that is not so true for the fish. And you can't go fishing without catching a perch so he got one of those too.

a is for alligator, k is for kittens

April 24, 2009- Pecos and I made the trek to Louisiana for a weekend visit while Casey stayed behind for work and to make sure we didn't wash away- we got 4 inches of rain, yippee!!! Pecos was not too sure about Ziggy the baby alligator. He was quite surprised to find out that she was real...I guess at first he thought she was a toy and then she moved! But he didn't really want to touch her- smart boy! Mimi and Paw Paw had a fresh litter of kittens so Pecos took it upon himself to check on them every hour or so. After a day or two of that he no longer wanted to check on them, he wanted to play with them. I have a feeling these four may be hitch-hiking their way to Harper on Mimi and Paw Paw's next visit.
Awww, aren't they cute?
Okay, hurry up mom, they are scratching me.Enough of that, I'm outta here!
Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if I squeezed it really hard?

earth day

April 22, 2009- Not much exciting happening on Earth Day for Pecos. We celebrated by filling our bird feeders and picking up a few stray cans on our road- that's about it. But since he had a special t-shirt to wear to mark the occasion I thought I'd post it for all to see.

bluebonnet babe

April 15, 2009- Time for the annual bluebonnet photos. This year the bluebonnets were not that great in this part of Texas. I guess the winter was too hot and dry. It was hard to find a good patch of them but we managed to find these and took our token photos anyway.

easter- pecos style

April 12, 2009- The Easter bunny was good to Pecos this year. For weeks leading up to Easter he told us the Easter bunny would bring him a tool box and new tools. On Easter morning Pecos was decked out in his Christmas pajamas and looking for prizes from the Easter bunny. So his color coordination was a little off but he didn't care- he was in it for the tools.
And who needs a basket to hunt eggs? As you can see he would rather tote around his new tool box.On to the egg hunt at Oma's house....after a few eggs he was done. So much for eggs, Pecos would rather play with rocks and climb fences (big surprise, I know).
And we had to make sure the Easter bunny brought something for the other kid in the family- Uncle Duke. He and Pecos had fun with their lollipop lips.

ye ole german easter

April 11, 2009- Pecos visited the Sauer-Beckmann living history farm at LBJ National Park to see how Easter was celebrated German immigrant-style.

He had fun making cards.
Anyone want Turkey for Easter dinner? Pecos tried to run one down but with not much luck so we'll have to eat something else instead. Oma showed him how to make an Easter nest. He even landed his photo on the front page of the Fredericksburg newspaper.

fun with aunt jamie

April 9, 2009- Pecos had lots of fun when his godmother, Jamie, came for a quick visit at Easter time. Jamie is a very busy lady so we were thrilled that she had time to see us on her visit home. Of course, like a good godmother should, Jamie came with "prizes" for Pecos- one of which was the chocolate bunny. Now, Pecos is not a huge fan of chocolate (shocking, I know), but this was something new and of course it was from Aunt Jamie so you should have seen him shoveling down his dinner just to get a chance to eat that chocolate bunny. He hit the main parts- ears, candy eyes and carrot pieces. Delicious- and messy- poor bunny!!

Next on the agenda was dying eggs. This was Pecos' first attempt at dying eggs this year; he was soooooooo excited and of course had to give instruction to Jamie on exactly which cup of dye was the right one for each egg. Can't you see the excitement in his face? It was lots of fun and we look forward to Aunt Jamie's next visit.

egg-stravaganza

April 5, 2009- Oh, what fun- Pecos' first Easter Egg Hunt where he was an active and excited participant. (Last year he was more concerned that he had a basket than what to actually do with the basket.) The annual St. Anthony Catholic Church Easter Egg Hunt was last Sunday afternoon. Pecos didn't quite know what would happen when we told him about it but he sure was excited. And hands down, the best part of the event for Pecos was the baby chicks given away to all participants. Forget hunting eggs, he is all about expanding his chicken operation.

And they're off!
He was very choosy with which egg he selected for his basket, so needless to say he was not in the running for the prize for most eggs. His goal was quality, not quantity.
Here are the two chicks that were lucky enough to go home with Pecos. Their names are Perch and Blackie. Yes, that really is a Church's Fried Chicken box provided for transport. How funny is that?
Pecos was so proud of his two new chicks but not as eager to hold them as some of the other attendees. He has since overcome the anxiety and constantly wants to catch one.
And he was so excited about his two new chicks that we had to get the colored ones at the feed store to add to the flock. Really though, it is just a way for me to live vicariously through Pecos because my parents never let me have colored chicks when I was a kid.

fishin' by the light of the moon

April 4, 2009- Pecos has been practicing his fishing cast in the yard all winter and Casey decided it was time to wet the fishing line. So off we went to find a fishing hole.

Pecos was quick to inform us that the moon was out.
Digging for more worms!!
A biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig perch!
Here's the whopper.
And a little time to botche in the water.

monkey see, monkey do

April 4, 2009- Pecos was watching Casey weld and cut during the garden expansion project. So he had to try his hand at it. Notice his hat is turned backwards. He saw Casey do that and of course he wasn't going to attempt the cutting torch without following each step carefully. He tried to put on the goggles but couldn't figure out how to get them over his hat so he just laid them nearby in case they might be needed.

strawberry fields forever

April 2, 2009- We went strawberry picking on the windiest day of the year. Wind gusts of at least 30 mph. But it was the only day of the week we could make it. And since most days the orchard closes early because there are so many pickers we thought we'd better go in case we didn't get another chance or run the risk of the orchard closing for the year because the berry plants quit producing. The berries were much smaller this year than last and Pecos was not quite as enthusiastic due to the wind but we still had a great time and left with a boxful of berries.

This looks like a good one.

Tastes as good as it looks!

After a short stint of picking, Pecos became the spotter. "Get that one, Oma!", "Follow me, Mama.", "Put it in my box!"

And once his box was full he was ready to leave.

So heavy!

Strawberry pie, anyone?
