6 months old & thankful

November 25, 2010- Thanksgivng Day...what a perfect day to be thankful for Brazos as he turned 6 months old!

Brazos is getting so big so fast!  An entire half of a year has flown by.  This past month Brazos has been GROWING out of clothes faster than I can put them on him.  We definitely noticed a growth spurt and he wears mostly 9 month size clothes, otherwise they aren't long enough!  He's sitting up on his own although still a bit wobbly sometimes.  He continues to eat baby food and cereal with a bottle to wash it down.

Here's the rest of the 6 month stats:

Length: 29.25 inches (98% tile)
Weight: 18.5 pounds (65% tile)
Head circumference: 17.13 (38% tile)

At his 6-month check up he got 2 shots; one on delayed vaccination schedule and the other was flu.

As you can see from the photos we manage to get him to smile often but he can be rather serious at times too.  He still has reflux and although the medication helps with the burning, nothing keeps the spit up at bay so it has become quite normal for both of us to change clothes many times a day, or just wear it all day!

Brotherly Love:
Ready for the A&M vs. Nebraska game...reading his Baby Einstein book learning how to harvest corn!
Just look at that smirk...

Because reflux is still an issue we decided not to travel for Thanksgiving.  Driving in a car 9 hours down I-10 with holiday traffic just didn't seem like an appropriate thing to do if we all wanted to enjoy the holiday.  So MiMi and Paw Paw came to the Hill Country to celebrate and we were ever-THANKFUL for that!

opening day

November 6, 2010- Opening day of deer season is always packed full of activity.  This year the boys and I suited up in our cammo to head into town for the Harper Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry.  Casey opted out of the cammo attire.  The frown on Pecos' face in this photo was due to the fact that I told him he had to put down his gun, I mean stick.
Huntin' buddies:
MiMi & Paw Paw arrived early afternoon.  Paw Paw was missing the boys so he drove MiMi over, stayed for a night and headed back home for work.  MiMi stayed a few more days to watch the boys while I went out of town for a work project.  While Paw Paw was here he helped Pecos move some firewood to the porch for me.  Pecos is learning at a young age to take care of his momma....and I couldn't be any happier about that!

As for hunting, the deer on our place all survived.  After weeks of talk from Pecos about his plans to hunt with Casey in the morning he decided the night before that he would wake up early but just get in bed with me instead of going hunting.  So Casey went out alone but didn't see any bucks.  Maybe that is because we seem to be over-run with does and spikes.  He said there was just too much to do that day to mess with a deer so we'll have to wait a while for deer sausage and jerky.

Olé ~ Halloween 2010

October 31, 2010- It was another fun year and cute costume for Halloween this year.  Pecos was a Matador with Brazos standing in as Ferdinand the Bull.

This idea all started sometime this summer when Pecos got the Ferdinand children's book.  We read that book over and over at bedtime for many, many nights.  Which started a conversation about bull fighters and how the Matador was different from the bull fighters in the PBR and the rodeo.  And somehow that led to the idea that Pecos would be a Matador for Halloween and Brazos would be Ferdinand.

So the search began for a matador costume.  I found a vintage pattern on-line but I held off on buying it because I knew it would be so much work to make a 5-slim out of a size 10 pattern. Apparently PETA has pushed their agenda onto the Halloween scene and a Matador is neither popular nor available as a kid's costume.   So it was back to the internet to purchase the pattern I had seen previously; no such luck because of course it was already sold.

I did more searching, figured out ways to create one out of regular clothes and accessories, and then I hit the jackpot.  This costume was in an on-line estate sale listing complete with the shoes, hat and cape.  Who has this kind of thing in their estate? I guess we do now!  It was not in the best condition and needed quite a bit of alterations and repairs, but it was worth it because Pecos was the best little Matador with Brazos as a rather cute Ferdinand Harper has ever seen.

And of course he had to mimic the pose of a true Matador.
Brazos' costume was not easy to come by either.  When it comes to bovine costumes the only thing available is a Holstein cow.  And because it was a polyester blend I wasn't able to dye it.  So I spray painted it instead.  He wore it long enough to take the photo and make a public appearance at the Fall Festival but I didn't want to overdo it with the paint fumes or let his bare arms get too cold.  He switched to more comfortable attire for trick or treating.

We missed the official costume contest at the Harper Fall Festival but I think Pecos was the crowd favorite; he and Brazos were our favorites!

pumpkin carving

October 28, 2010- What do you do with your pumpkin from the pumpkin patch?  Carve it, of course!  Pecos was so very excited at the chance to carve the pumpkin from his class field trip to the pumpkin patch in Medina.
First, remove the "yucky stuff".

Next, let your little brother help remove all that yucky stuff while you point out where you want the eyes to be.

Then let daddy and Brazos do the carving.

Show off the amazing creation.

Finally, put it in your room to make a cool new night light.

pumpkin patch

October 28, 2010- We made our annual visit to the pumpkin patch in Medina.  Pecos' class went there on a field trip and Brazos and I tagged along for the fun.

Pecos' favorite activity is the hay maze as it has been for the past three years.  There are always pumpkins on the hay bales and Pecos always seems to want to rearrange them.  They were each allowed to select one pumpkin to take home and after much discernment Pecos selected a great one.

Then he played on the hay bales for a while.  Funny, we have hay bales at home but he never wants to play on them here.  He has a clear definition of work and play and doesn't want to cross that line I guess.

The barrel train was a big hit with the kids.

 Happy Fall Y'all !!

5 months old

October 25, 2010- Brazos is 5 months old now!  My how time flies.

This past month has been full of laughs and fun times for Brazos.  He REALLY loves laughing at Pecos.  And if Casey is home at night to put Pecos to bed and tell one of his famous bed time stories I usually put Brazos in the bed with them.  He gets really wound up with high pitched screeches and wiggles...maybe not the best thing to do just before bedtime!

After switching off the hypo-allergenic formula last month we realized that wasn't going to work because apparently little Brazos has a big sensitivity problem with milk protein- at least for now.  Maybe he'll grow out of it one day, who knows.

Thrush was back again and this time we're trying a different medicine for it because he's getting it so frequently.  I hope this is the last of it.  Pecos went in to the doctor in early October for an allergy induced sinus infection and the doctor thought Brazos was also getting the start of it so she prescribed Amoxicillin for him.  He took it for 4 or 5 days and then I forgot it for a day or two- (bad on my part, I know).  A few days after that he was getting a little snotty again and I remembered the Amoxicillin and gave it to him to finish it off.  But he broke out in HIVES.  Yes, hives; and lots of them.  But thankfully it was just a skin reaction and no constriction of his airway to cause a complete panic attack for me.  So I'm pretty sure he's allergic to penicillin.  But hey, we've made it 5 whole months without an ear infection!

buckle boy

October 3, 2010- The mutton bustin' buckle has finally arrived!  Back in June when Pecos made a spontaneous decision to do mutton bustin' at the Peach Jamboree, Casey promised him a belt buckle if he was one of the winners.  Sure enough, he was in the top three so we had to order him his very own buckle.

That turned out to be a much more drawn out process than we expected thanks to the multiple mistakes made by Montana Silversmiths.  First they did the engraving wrong, then they lost the order.  Finally it arrived and made our Pecos one very happy cowboy!

laser at the ready

October 2, 2010- Pecos was invited to a birthday party at the arcade in Kerrville.  Laser tag was part of the party fun and Pecos was VERY excited to strap on the vest, grab the laser gun and begin shooting.

So what if he had it backwards and was shooting himself most of the time!

4 months old

September 25, 2010-  A quarter of a year has passed already for our little guy.  This month Brazos has really started to laugh and smile and settle into a somewhat predictable routine.

But we've still been battling reflux.  And thrush- he's had his third or maybe fourth round of it.  The medicine prescribed for it works great to get rid of it but then it comes back a week or two after it goes away.  We sterilize everything with a standard bottle sterilizer but have even begun to boil everything at least once a week.

For now we've switched from the hypo-allergenic (translation: expensive!) formula back to a "gentle/sensitive" formula.  But we're still not sure if he has a sensitivity to milk protein so we may be back on a hypo-allergenic formula again.

And he got his first immunization at his 4-month well baby visit.  With all the issues Brazos is having and the paranoia from reading too much and talking to too many moms of toddlers I'm doing a delayed vaccination schedule with him.

As for baby food, applesauce and pears seem to be his favorites.  Still not a big fan of peaches but bananas are good.  And we've started with vegetables- squash and sweet potatoes so far.
Brazos is still wearing 3-6 month clothes, but barely!  I'm sure he'll be moving up a size in the next month.  Still in a size 3 diaper and not sure what shoe size because I've yet to put any one him- he sometimes wears socks but mainly goes barefoot everywhere!

Here's the stats from his 4-month well baby visit:

Weight: 16.5 pounds (77%tile)
Height:  26.75 inches (94%tile)
Head Circumference: 42.5 cm (55%tile)

Wanted to capture him at 4 months old so we had some quick portraits done:

the cowboy and the butterfly

September 24, 2010- The Fredericksburg Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS) group visited the Butterfly Haus at Wildseed Farms.  Despite numerous trips to Wildseed Farms for plants, gifts and bluebonnet seeds I'd never taken the time to go through the butterfly section.  But since the weather was nice and the friendly folks at Wildseed Farms let us go through it for free I thought it'd be fun to do.  It was really neat to see so many of them flying around and landing all over the place.

One even landed right on Pecos' cowboy hat.  Actually, Oma was with us and she was taking a photo of me and the boys.  As soon as she took our photo and was walking toward us to give the camera back we noticed this butterfly landing on Pecos' hat.  "BE STILL- DON'T MOVE," I declared!  Oma snapped a photo as fast as she could before the butterfly decided manure and dirt didn't make such a good snack after all.

It just so happens that Wildseed Farms had recently received a shipment of pumpkins, gourds and various other typical fall harvest items.  Oma told Pecos he could pick out one for him and one for Brazos to "put by his door" to decorate for fall.  She meant the door to our house.  Pecos thought she meant the door to his room, so that is where he put them.  And that is where they shall stay!

labor day

September 4-6, 2010- Labor Day weekend was packed with fun for the Worrell's.  Harper has their annual community gathering, Frontier Days.  It is a day of fun in the park with plenty of kid friendly fun, followed by a parade, BBQ meal and rodeo.

We started the day at the kid's fishing contest at the creek/tank in the park.  They stock it with fish a week or so prior to the event and hope the water level holds and the fish survive.  Pecos was in the first group to fish- the 5 and younger crowd.  So Casey baited up the Lightning McQueen rod and reel and hoped for a big one.  But there was no 5 pound bass, just a few nibbles and nothing for him to catch.  But one kid did land a fairly large catfish so we know they are out there!

Brazos was still feeling the pain of reflux and an upset digestive system so he stayed close to me for the most part.

I was in charge of the stick horse rodeo which was fun for the younger kids.  And we managed to have a successful rodeo with lots of participants but no photos!  Pecos and Brownie had a few good runs and came out first in the barrels and flag race but a late start put them third in the horse races.

Pecos enjoyed the parade; Brazos, not so much.

Finally, on Labor Day, Casey was in Kansas ultrasounding cattle at Gardiner Angus so the boys and I had a picnic in "the shady spot" down in the pasture.  Pecos and I always talk about what a nice place that would be to have a picnic because it is shady and there are no rocks.  So we penned the horses and heifers and enjoyed our picnic.

first day of pre-k

August 31, 2010- Today was the first day of pre-k for Pecos.  Although it was a tearful milestone for me as a mom, Pecos was somewhat unfazed.  He was mildly excited and not too sad.  He is returning this year to Harper Head Start where he attended their 3-year old program last year.  Perhaps the familiarity of the place made it not so traumatic for him.  Or maybe he is just growing up and that is something I am reluctantly admitting to.  Not sure how I'll manage to handle sending him off to kindergarten next year.

He of course wanted to wear his boots, jeans and cowboy hat to school.  I told him they wouldn't let him wear boots because he may accidentally step on someones fingers to which he replied he would be really careful.  So I insisted it was much too hot and he said he was tough.  Then I told him if he wore his cowboy hat all the kids would want to touch it and wear it so he quickly agreed that wasn't such a great idea.  He ended up in his "city clothes" but still looked mighty handsome.
